The answer is simple! Braces can be completed in as few as 2 months or they may last up to 2 years, all depending on what needs to be corrected. Keep reading to understand what makes the time in treatment vary from patient to patient.
The amount of time required for braces is primarily a factor of how much correction is needed. For instance, if an adult patient has mild crowding of the lower teeth or mild spacing of the upper teeth, this can sometimes be corrected in as little as 2 months. For my adult patients it is very important to have a predictable completion date which is often centered around a major event like a family wedding. Having the perfect smile for a major event is a real confidence builder especially when many photographs are expected.
Patients who have either moderate crowding or spacing usually fall somewhere in the middle taking 8-12 months for completion. Patients with severe crowding or spacing along with bite problems are often in treatment 18-24 months. Extremely complicated problems such as impacted teeth and growth issues can sometimes take more than 24 months for correction.
Patients who want to finish orthodontic treatment in the least amount of time should focus on these areas:
- Brush and floss regularly.
- Cooperate fully with elastic wear during bite correction.
- Avoid hard and sticky foods.
- Try not to miss appointments.
When considering orthodontic treatment, one should get an opinion from a Board Certified Orthodontist. Make sure to let the orthodontist know your main concern and get a clear understanding of the treatment plan and timeline.
